High Quality Work - Claim 2:

Research: A Capstone Experience

IPP's - The Final Presentation

The students’ final presentation piece is the result of months of preparation, thinking, learning, experiences, documentation, revisions, and polishing.  These stand-alone pieces, are typically (but not always) presented on a display board and include Pre-Trip, Trip, and Post-Trip sections. Each written section has been through several revisions based on a significant self, peer and teacher feedback process. While these projects are stand-alone pieces, they also support their authors in communicating the depth of their learning during the students’ oral presentation.

As a part of the "capstone experience" component of the Travel Study learning expedition, we believe it is important for each student to share his/her learning with our community. Not only does this help our students with deepening their speaking and presentation skills, it also as a part of building the power of the tradition for future 8th graders. 6th and 7th graders, on the night of Reflections from the Field are exposed to a culture of anticipation, tradition, and high stakes presentations, and this adds to the power of the project as they look ahead to their own experience as 8th graders.

All 8th graders go through our entire IPP (Independent Project Process), complete this final stand alone product and present/interpret their project at Reflections from the Field.  Each year this includes all our 8th graders on IEPs and 504s (see demographics page for the high percentage of students this includes). Below is a video of students presenting their final IPPs, two examples of IPP Presentation Pieces and the final Travel Study movie.

Final Movie

Watch the Travel Study movie for a sense of the trip phase from flowing through essential components (authentic investigation, community connection & adventure), to feeling the sensations we experienced.  Images and videos are woven together with quotes written and read by students sharing their learning, experiences and transformations.
